Social Bookmarking Vs Search Engine

Every internet user, of course, is familiar with the concept of bookmarks, but for many years those bookmarks were confined to a single PC. Once you have bookmarked a site or sites, you can access them anytime by logging back in to the social bookmarking site, regardless of what computer you are using at the time.

One of the newest and most potentially valuable trends in the world of the internet is that of social bookmarking, and those who are able to understand and use this trend should be able to profit from it handsomely. After all, why spend hours searching for the best job related, entertainment related or other links when thousands of internet users have already found and identified their favorite sites. The idea of social bookmarking is that if search results are all derived from people’s bookmarks then every site appearing in a search result should have at least some value.

Once you save your bookmark it is put in the social bookmarking database for everyone to access. When another member searches using the ‘tag’ words you created, they will see your bookmark, the comments you have provided, and web site URL. If multiple bookmarked pages have the same tag, search results will be sorted by how many times each site has been bookmarked: the site that has been bookmarked by the most people appears at the top of the search results.

According to web designers and optimizers, social bookmarks serve as a nice add-on for an online businesses' overall Web marketing campaign. Because in the realm of improving your Web site's potentials, it's all about traffic, and your online bookmarks help to generate links which can potentially bring traffic to your respective site.

Ever changing search engine algorithms and the penalizing of site rankings for common SEO methodologies has forced SEO companies to come up with new ways optimize site rankings. Thus, the importance of Social Bookmarking and its relevance to today’s SEO is becoming undeniable and the practice of Social Bookmark campaigns for SEO purposes has grown exponentially in the past year.

I don't think it's social bookmarking vs. search engine. I think they work together in achieving your site's ultimate goal...more traffic. Good post.

I never really knew how bookmarking (especially) Delicious...would help me. I thought if I bookmarked a site it would only be available for me. Thanks for explaining

I agree with Roschelle. If you put them against each other you'll most likely lose more than you gain; but if they are used together then in the end you'll reach your ultimate goal of more traffic.
